A Sedona day trip from Flagstaff

Pines in the morning, red rocks by lunchtime and your Flagstaff home waiting at the end of the day. Give Sedona a full day so the drive, a walk and a good meal can all be part of the experience.

The scenic drive

Let Oak Creek Canyon become part of the outing.

Your main stop

Choose a walk, art and shopping, or a little of both.

A slower return

Leave time for traffic, a meal and the drive back.

Let Oak Creek Canyon be part of the day

When road conditions suit your plans, State Route 89A takes you from Flagstaff through Oak Creek Canyon into Sedona. The winding scenic route is part of the outing, with changing landscapes along the way.

Check highway conditions before leaving. Use designated parking and overlooks rather than narrow shoulders. Weather, traffic and the stops you choose will shape the journey—leave room for the return drive, too.

Choose your kind of red rock day

For a walking day: Choose a trail that suits everyone’s fitness, the weather and current access. Decide on a main walk before leaving and keep a second option in mind.

For an art-and-town day: Wander Uptown, then make time for Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. Its galleries, outdoor art, courtyards and shops offer plenty to explore without a long hike.

For a little of both: Pair one manageable outdoor stop with lunch and an afternoon browse. Leave space between stops instead of trying to see every landmark.

Plan parking before the trailhead

The city’s Sedona Shuttle connects Park & Ride locations with selected trailheads. Check its current routes, operating calendar and return service when planning your walk.

Some trailheads have parking restrictions when shuttle service operates. Confirm the arrangements for your destination. The trailhead shuttle is local Sedona transport; you still need to plan your journey from Flagstaff.

Leave room for a meal

A relaxed lunch can be the best pause between the canyon drive and an afternoon exploring. Choose the part of Sedona where you want to spend time, then look for a restaurant nearby. That keeps you from repeatedly crossing town for individual stops.

Check a restaurant’s own menu, availability and reservation arrangements before making a particular meal the centerpiece of your day.

Check access, then make the day yours

Trail, creek and recreation-site access can change independently of the roads through town. Review current notices before choosing a hike or creek stop, including post-fire access updates where relevant.

Bring water, sun protection and layers, and adapt the plan if conditions change. Return to Flagstaff with time to settle in, whether tomorrow brings another adventure or a slower day around town.

Your Flagstaff home base.

Choose a smaller stay for a quiet escape, or a larger home with room for your group. Compare each home’s details, then check dates and availability.
